Our goal is to provide exceptional music education to students of all ages; cultivate a life-long appreciation of music in a nurturing environment, and to foster creativity and confidence through the joy of musical learning. The Providence School of Music has served Providence and the surrounding communities since 2016, and is Rhode Island's largest music school, with an enrollment of over 500 students from ages 4 to adult. Whatever instrument you or your child wish to play, odds are we teach it: Piano, electric & acoustic Guitar, Drums, Bass, Strings, Woodwinds, Ukulele, and Singing all taught in one location.
While you are here researching the best school for you, please consider the benefits of becoming a Providence School of Music student and find out why we are Providence, RI's number one choice for music lessons.
In order to keep our students, staff, and teachers safe, we have implemented the Family Safety Plan in our schools! This includes glass windows on lesson rooms to foster transparency between teachers and parents, full-time office staff so that students and teachers are never left unsupervised, requiring extensive background checks of all of our teachers and staff, security cameras in all rooms, and an open-door policy for parents, which means that they’re always invited to sit in on their child’s lessons. Learn more at FamilySafetyPlan.org.
This saves our students time and money, as one family can take lessons for different instruments on the same day in the same location. Other studios offer multiple instruments, but we are the only one to offer all of the most popular instruments in one convenient, safe, high quality environment. You get the BEST music lesson experience that no one else in Providence can offer.
We have 25 music teachers, all with either college training or professional performance experience. Our music teachers are dedicated to learning about your personal musical goals and helping you to achieve them. In addition to their teaching credentials, our teachers have warm personalities, are extremely friendly and dedicated to teaching you the style of music you want to learn.
If you are a complete beginner and have never taken a musical instrument lesson in your life, you’ve come to the right place!
We've also helped many professional and experienced musicians achieve higher levels.
We are equally able to teach a new beginner their very first song as we are preparing a Berklee College of Music applicant for their audition.
Visit our testimonial page to see what our students are saying. Every year, aspiring music teachers start their own studio, and a few months later it’s closed. Our School has a proven track record of offering quality music lessons year round in Providence. Teaching music is our mission, and over 500 students trust us with their music education every week.
Instead of waiting in a music store showroom, our clients enjoy a spacious waiting room with comfortable seating, Wi-Fi, magazines and water service. Or if you prefer, you're welcome to sit in on the students' lesson.
Our rooms are stocked with everything you need for music lessons, including acoustic upright and grand pianos, electronic keyboards, amps, drum kits, and more. All you need to bring is your instrument.
Technology is a big part of lessons at the Providence School of Music. We've invested thousands of dollars to offer soundproof studios with large observation windows. Bluetooth speakers in every classroom allow students to integrate all of the great new music teaching apps and music software into their lessons.
By providing lessons that are fresh, new, and engaging, our students never risk being bored by their lessons.
We are the only music school in Providence that offers free recitals with a grand piano in a professional recital hall.
Every parent wants to know how their child is progressing. The best way to understand if their investment in lessons is worth it is to have their child participate in a recital.
In June and December, many of our students choose to perform in our biannual recitals, held at prestigious auditoriums with fantastic acoustics, such as The Jewish Community Center and The Music Mansion, both conveniently located minutes from our school on the east side of Providence.
Every Spring and Fall we host a free picture day with a professional photographer. This is a service that our student's parents love as they all want quality photos of their children (example pictured left). Adults are welcome too! Students can bring their instruments to the photo shoot and wear whatever they like."
Many of our students have gone on to become successful performers in rock, pop and jazz bands around New England.
Our students have won numerous competitions in jazz and classical guitar and have performed at Carnegie Hall.
Our former students have also been admitted to Berklee, New England Conservatory, and other music schools and conservatories.

Phil Mazza is the founder and director of the Providence School of Music. Phil holds a BA in jazz performance and an MM in classical composition from the University of Rhode Island, where he graduated summa cum laude. He is a recipient of various grants such as the Bobby Hackett Jazz Scholarship and the Antonio Cirino Memorial Art Education Fellowship from the RI Foundation.
Since 2003, Phil has been an integral part of the Providence music community through education, performing in jazz ensembles, and commissioning his own classical works. A dedicated music advocate, Phil has been teaching guitar, composition, and music theory to students of various ages and experience levels for over 15 years.
In the Summer of 2017, Phil decided it was time to use his experience to form the Providence Guitar Academy, which has now expanded into the Providence School of Music.
The ability to play an instrument or sing beautifully offers a lifetime of benefits. Music lessons also foster a student’s personal, social and academic development. The Providence School of Music has made substantial investments in our new facility and elite faculty to create an uplifting setting designed to foster creativity, confidence and joy.
